"Now I can only hope she does as promised - thats what an election is about right?" Yuppers. Or as I said to Angie in one of the threads, the election is the EASY part. I don't think, regardless of who wins, that they will be able to just say "Whew, that's over, now on to business as usual." The genii is out of the bottle, now, and can't be put back. 3-year terms are the MAXIMUM, not the MINIMUM. Really, as elections go, this one is the tamest of the several I have been aware of. For the most part, people have maintained on point. Which is good. One can only hope that, regardless of who wins, the malcontents amongs us don't throw roadblocks up just to be contrary. After all, it should be about the dogs and the club, and what is best for them, not trying to screw up everything just to make one person look bad. Lisa

And you are one of our "outside the box" thinkers who will probably survive this FT-breedings crisis. It's a shame that we have neglected some very talented and proven performance dogs in our midst because they do not have pedigrees liberally sprinkled with FC or AFC dogs. We have never had enough titled dogs at any time in our history to allow us to breed strictly to titled dogs. yet, I have heard this advocated for the last 5-10 years, and see where it has led us! The wise ones have always looked outside the FT lines for fresh talent and genes. Look at R. R. M Carpenter (Dilwyne), Anthony Bliss (Chesacroft), Alex Spear (Chesdel) and for modern times, Carol Andersen (Caroway) and Mario Beauregard (Nordais). They all have one thing in common: they would linebreed or inbreed for a generation, then outcross to a "show line" with proven performance ability. Their skill lay not in their pedigrees, but in their selection process once the pups were born. Inbreeding coefficients are way up, fertility is way down. The handwriting is on the wall. Time to outcross, people! Lisa

"We may not have the breed field trial numbers or diversity that was present 20 years ago" That's my point. "the FIELD side of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever is alive and well" It won't be for long, unless something changes. Diversity doesn't increase over time, it decreases. As Jim so eloquently states, it's not just the FC and AFC dogs that should be included in breeding programs, but the MH dogs, the GRHRCH dogs, those who have proven they can DO IT, regardless of pedigree. In fact I would go one further. We have several males who are Ch/MH, some even QAA who are **** producers, who have been virtually ignored. These make logical outcross candidates, yet get passed over because they do not have the right number of FC or AFC dogs in their pedigrees. So maybe it isn't about the dogs, their abilities, and their genes at all. Maybe some people just have an insecurity problem, and don't want to be seen with a dog (regardless how talented) that isn't from the Chip x Surf cross. And the fact is, Keith, your dogs are now from this cross as well, so aren't "different" at all. They all go to Surf and Chip. No exceptions. How long do you think people can sustain this unbranching family tree? The fact that your litter consisted of 2 (count 'em, 2) pups would suggest that "indefinitely" is not an option. Lisa

He's entitled to his opinion. Don't sell yourself short with the "wannabe" tag. If anything, the "wannabes" may very well be the people who salvage the Chessie as a FT animal. People like Julie Cole, Dana Bleifer, Peter Goetsch, Ray Gonzales, Jeff & Joyce Shaw, and many others who were branded early on with the "show" designation by ignorent/insecure folks. These people are working very hard to test/trial their dogs from diverse non field-trial backgrounds. One can only hope that the FT fraternity will wake up in time to utilize some of these dogs to broaden the sadly bottlenecked FT gene pool. The dogs have proven the talent, and their ability to pass it on to the next generation, so what is the problem? I can only assume it is a self-image issue among those who consider themselves "real trialers", and everyone else "wannabes". People who have successfully tapped into "different" bloodlines read like a who's who of FT BREEDERS (not just FT handlers who have a litter here and there, but BREEDERS who have a vision and have developed a line). Carol Andersen, Mario Beauregard, Linda Harger, have all used various dogs/bitches from "different" lines to build their bloodlines, and continue to do so. Some of these efforts are more successful than others, but it takes guts, and a willingness to experiment, to become a true BREEDER, not just a guy who follows the crowd. Jim Fitzsimmons said something to the effect that if a guy is going to pay $200 for a pup, then he shoul reduce his risk mas much as possible. True. But there is no law that says a pup must cost $2000! There are lots of nice, talented dogs in this breed (I believe), that cost far less than that. All they need is someone with the vision, talent, and GUTS to take them home, raise them up right, get them the right education, and see what shakes out! Heck, for that same $2000, I can buy 4 puppies, weed out 3, and still be ahead of the game, genetically! Lisa

A friend of mine yesterday was telling me how he had sold his lab to a man whom he thought was a good person and would take good care of his dog. At the time my friend thought this man would be better for his dog since he had a family and my friend lives alone. It had been a hard decision, but he thought it would be best for his dog. Now he found out differently. He just now found out that the man has been neglecting his dog...not giving him any shots or heartworm protection or flea and tick protection. Also he man never told him that he had an 8 year old son who is bi-polar. He found out the the boy had harrassed the lab so much that it had caused him to bit his son on the lip requiring stitches.. So now my question... he told me had had contacted the Omaha animal protection but they said that since the man lived out of the city limits, they had no jurisdiction. So what else can he do? He is devastated and is considering just going and "getting" his dog forcibly. I told him that I thought he might then be arrested himself. Therese

The last time I looked there are THREE dedicated FT people here in Colorado. I recently became the RD here. So, who in Colorado (that play the FT game and only visits the board to disagree) are willing to help me put on training days and get others interested in your game? I sincerely hope I am wrong, however, the number of positive replies I get back will prove how FT people are not only "going about" ruining the interest in, but, integrity of the FT CBR.

Donna, What do you mean, a dog that questions? What kind of questions are they asking you? You are ignorant if you believe all Chesapeakes are a challenge. They are not, they should be easy to train for anything. It absolutely blows me away that people accept these ridiculus concepts and negative steroetypes that surround our breed. Now, because so many actually believe this crap they become entitled to breed dogs that are a challenge, thus fullfilling the stereotypes. When non-chesapeake people describe our breed the words challenging and independent are often used, and not in a positive manner. Those are polite words to describe dumb, won't listen, doesn't care and out of control. I've been around the "independent" Peake. They are just a joy, running all over hell looking for birds out of gun range, not coming back until they are done hunting. They are even more of a joy in the neighborhood, tearing down the block in pursuit of anything they want and bringing back the neighbors trash to your porch so everyone on the block knows who is the guilty party. I don't deny these dogs exist but they don't have to and certainly should not be bred. Many people might not know this but there are Chesapeakes out there like JJ describes. Easy to train, wonderful house pets that can be trusted and appreciated in any endeavor and will do what you ask of them. This is what the average Joe wants. No 2x4 needed. Scott

Susie, I think your count of FT people is much too high. I only count 1 and he has done much for the field training and WD program in Colorado in the past. He has tried, judged, competed, brought birds, shown up to support those competing in FT and hunt tests and has done so with little support and thanks. However, your statement "sincerely hope I am wrong, however, the number of positive replies I get back will prove how FT people are not only "going about" ruining the interest in, but, integrity of the FT CBR. " is off base. I don't know how the lack of repsonse you get from 1 person is ruining the integrity of the FT CBR. Especially when he has already tried to do what you are attempting. Nonetheless, you have my support and I will do what I can as long as my work schedule allows. That is a 50% positive response from past and current colo FT enthusiasts, and that is a 50% improvement over the support I ever received from the Colorado show people when I was running FT's. PS It wasn't me that brought up the show and FT thing, I just merely asked someone to support what they wrote. Scott

that is great response, being a KPT instructor and a breeder, the chessie to me is one of the easiest breeders to train. They are like a little sponge. I have also found the breed to be "what's in it for me", for a piece of hot dog, tennis ball, or bumper they will do ANYTHING. I also love this breed becasue it remembers everything you teach them, which also means do not make any mistakes. I have found mistakes the hardest thing to correct in this breed. give me a CBR puppy any day in KPT, they will always graduate #1 in their class. Joanne

I guess I am the last person anybody wants to hear from on this subject, but I know that Christy and Ray Gonzales who are show people are up and coming in the field trails. They have been running their dogs, owner trained and handled. I think they are between puppies for the derby this year, but have one in Puppy Stakes, they did have one last year at the national out of so called show lines that placed in the Derby. So they are out there, but it is up to the old time field people to mentor and bring the new people up. I know that Mike Moscowitz received little encouragement from local field and RD with Murray, but did that stop him NO. So now he has Murray and Larry his son who are doing wonderful and making this breed proud as a "dual" dog along with Ray and Christy Gonzales. So lets get the field people to do some mentoring. It would be nice like in the old days to have the field people training and running their own dogs, but with today's life style, means of training this has made it difficult. Many today living up north are using pro trainers so that their dogs can get trained 12 months a year. ok go ahead, flame away what else is new Joanne

and I totally agree with you Lisa, too many MH dogs and some with QAA are ignored. Especially the ones that were owner/trained/handled maybe they don't have the high coverage of a AFC or FC dog There are several i am personally looking at for breeding myself we have to be opened minded. I am reading an intersting book that was recommended to me "Handling Your Own Dog" By Martha Covington Thorne, 1979. some of it may be a little outdated but it covers handling your dog in all events. Some of her comments and coverage on the Chessie is pretty amazing, in fact, total shock. As the Historian I am trying to read everybook I can get my fingers on the breed. I want to thank Sue Keroack, a dear and special friend, for recommending this book. Those of you who dont' know Sue Keroack, you are missing out knowing who I consider one of the most knownable people in the breed, and she isn't running her dogs in field but has some of the best hunting dogs on the east coast. you don't have to prove your dog can hunt in a blind by running field trials. Field trials are an event not a way of life for the original duck hunters. and Keith Carlson need not reply to my posts. Joanne

A lab might be easier to train, although I have yet to have a lab puppy in KPT that is easier to train then a Chessie. Most labs can't concentrate on more than one thing for a second. The chessie being smarter, picks up immediately, pays attention and looks into your eyes, remembers, and can multi task, So there is no comparison Joanne

I'd just call up or stop by and say "I didn't know I'd miss the dog so much--" That may be all the new owner needs to give him up. After all, the dog's a lot of work AND it bit his kid. Your friend shouldn't let on that he knows about any of the other stuff, just ask for the dog. If the guy hesitates, then he can offer cash. I think I'd wonder about somebody who showed up with the checkbook TOO ready, if you know what I mean. The thing about Animal Control is that lack of flea or heartworm protection or having a bi-polor child are not grounds for seizing an animal. He needs to take the high road, I bet it will work.

Granted, it's best to be able to observe pups over an extended period of time, but the thing I like to look for is the pup with a very intelligent, somewhat "intense" look to their eyes. If they're always carrying something around in their mouth - big plus! You know, the pup who looks into your eyes and you can see that there's someone home behind their eyes. The one that is eagerly looking like they're trying to figure out just what you want them to do, so they can please you and make you happy. I adore these pups! Plus they should be pretty bold and not easily frightened. On some Golden Retreiver puppy aptitude test thingamabob that I've used (I'm sure you can find it if you goggle it), it's been a while, but I believe they usually rate like a 3. The higher #s can be too dominant/obstinate and will need more "convincing" if you know what I mean :-) and the lower #s I believe would just be too soft for my personality. For me, even though these pups can be (ahem) "trying" at times because of their intelligence, they have proven to be very, very trainable, and very enjoyable! Dana

Yes..this is Hunter.. brother of Britt and Grendl and Ridge and River. There was one other long coat in that litter..a light brown almost DG female that had a fluffy coat.. so much so people said she looked like a sheep when she grew up. I never did get to see what she looked like. I only had Hunter till he was 5.5 months old when I gave him to the guy who had purchased Grendl from me. So at a 1.5-2 yrs old Hunters coat had lengthened and was in beautiful ringlets that hung long but not too long. He had feathering on his legs that were ringlets and of course his ear feathering was all ringlets. He looked just like Grendl in conformation ..stocky big boned and not too tall.. about 23" at the shoulders. So the compact body and cute coat made him cuddly. :c) I dont know if Hunter exists any more.. being Grendl and Britt are 11 now.. he would be also if he was still alive. Thanks again Jayne for doing that for me. I appreciate that a lot. Kath

They may not always agree-Jo Ann & I agree to disagree and believe me, she makes up her own mind (I know JoAnn has been "warned" about Dyane's influence-which I laugh at I wish I had as much influence as I am rumored to have.) You have to be willing to make the tough choices, the tough decisions and be fair, consistent and apply things equally to all. Hopefully the members give JoAnn a chance to try and do this. Dyane

Kerrie didn't say she believed either end (show or FT)was right. She just stated what she has read. So your question isn't really relevent to her query to people. She is simply asking what it means to each person since she has heard both comments. Presevering the integrity of the breed- breeding for a healthy dog with a good temperament (for without that no matter how talented/trainable, the dog is worthless); a dog that looks like the dog described in the standard (not one as I was once told by a field trialer in an interview series I did-"I don't care if they have three legs, a curled tail or masked like a bandit as long as they will run and win at trials"; a dog who loves the water & birds; a dog thay is willing to train and a dog that still retains the love and affection of and to its owner; who is intelligent and sensible in nature; who protects its "home" with intimidation first and more if not taken seriously; a dog with physical toughness but mentally resilent, not soft. I agree with Lisa that too much FT breeding except for a handful of people is focused on titles and an ever smaller and less diverse pedigree lineage. As she points out (and it is well documented in genetics, the more inbred, the less fertility and vigor-both mentally and physically), if you are breeding for FT, you need to use dogs that have are Ch/MH or ** with Ch background on occasion. I think Kathy Miller pointed out the Meadowood dogs-her Rusty's litter with Sylvia's Willow produced several MH dogs-George's Brave is Ch MH UD ** (talk about trainability). Quite a nice accomplishment and message about the dogs. And in the end, the breed is a hunting dog not a FT dog. The original trials were more like hunting than now. Tony Bliss, jr. one of the leading proponents of field trials in the 30's wrote against speed (intense style)in retrievers. If titled parents were all that it took, we should have more FT titled dogs. FT titled dog takes good training and an owner believing in his dog and dedicated to pursuing the FC or AFC goal. Many of our titled dogs come from non-titled parents-some with significant conformation breeding close up. It does not mean that those dogs who do not title or only are hunting dogs are not dual. The breed's ability to work is dependent on the breath of its dogs & pedigrees not as much on its depth. I am not going to argue or engage in a debate. Good dogs come from good breeders. Dyane

Nope, I haven't had the baby yet. Still got till December. But, just had a baby shower last night. Ok, I'll state right up front - I think I've created a monster! :) Jake loves stuffed toys. Sure he likes a Nylabone too, but he loves his stuffed hedgehog and octopus. For the last couple years he's finally quit destroying them, so they last decently long. I came home last evening with all my baby loot. We unpacked it all so Tom could look at it. Jake totally freaked out by the stuffed yellow duck that vibrated and quacked when you pulled the string. Actually there are lots of baby toys now with the pull-string vibrating thing. I could tell that even though Jake was scared/excited about this strange toy, he still thought of it as "his". We put all the stuff away in the baby's room and put them up on shelves. This morning I'm going to get dressed and there is Jake, planted right in front of the shelves staring at the stuffed toys! So, what's the best solution? I can't see me taking away Jake's stuffed toys, so then all stuffed toys are now the baby's only. I don't see Jake ever forgetting that he used to get them and still wants them! Should I just try to really separate and teach him "Jake's toy" and "Baby's toy"? And how would I go about it. I'm also thinking that I need to start playing all these toys as I get them, to get him somewhat used to it. Like once we get the swing, get it going with the bells & whistles from time to time. Try to get him used to all the noise and lights that come with kids toys. Because he got a little crazy when that duck started quacking. Any advice is welcome! We've still got a few months, so I have time to put things in motion that will help with the transition. Traci

I never said the CBR wasn't easy to train. I said they are challenging. I don't consider this a negative. Each one has been an individual. For me they are not like other dogs. Most other breeds are very happy to do what is asked of them, for no other reason than because you asked. As Joanne said, the CBR always asks what's in it for them. My first CBR taught me patience. She refused to work when she sensed me getting frustrated with her. I never said they were dumb, didn't listen or didn't care. My dogs are very well behaved and actually listen quite well. No 2x4 was needed. I don't know when independent became a negative, but I don't consider it to be one.

  • AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day, JoAnn Colvin, calicocbrREMOVE@verizon.net, September 11, 2006 at 08:18:47
I posted this to the ACC list, but many of you are not on that list.So if you've seen this before...sorry! Yesterday my all breed club held our 4th annual AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day. What fun! We had tables set up with all kind of info supplied from AKC. We had helium balloons for the kids and candy, stickers, pencils, and prizes. There were a dozen or more breeds represented as well as even a very attractive Chessie rescue booth. The best part was a "kiddie" parade. Kids could bring their own dogs, but for those who were dogless, club members supplied willing canines. I can't describe the delight of one little boy in a wheelchair, completely non-verbal who broke into the hugest smile and laughed out loud as he paraded around the ring with two St. Beernards. Or the little boy with an artificial leg who did a fine job of walking a Pomeranian named Devil, who was! I was thinking why couldn't parent clubs do something like this. It would be a great RD activity, a meet the breed day or tie in with a local kennel club and solicit other breeds to attend also. So easy to do. Just a few hours. AKC supplies all printed material and other items to give away. Just need some trinkets, snacks and a few tables and xpens. And the plus side is that the club gets recognition from AKC for participating. Something to think about. JoAnn

Congratulations! We just celebrated my son's 1st birthday. Our chessie, Storm, was about 1 yr old when our son was born. Here's some random thoughts based on my recent experience. Baby toys are very tempting -- they rattle, squeek, etc.. Probably, none of what we did was necessary, but didn't require much effort either so who knows if it made any difference. As we were getting ready, we put all baby stuff in the nursery bedroom and Storm was not allowed in. We set up everything ike I'm sure you are doing now and made it clear baby's rooms is off limits. Sometimes, we would leave a few tempting baby items out -- so Storm could be correcting for messing with what's not his (just like we did with shoes, socks, etc.) Also had a baby doll that made crying noises and put it in the swing and taught Storm to stay away from swing. We would put the doll in the crib, carry him around, etc. But also, with permission, let Storm sniff baby doll, walk in baby's room (put baby powder scents, etc.). Storm doesn't really bother baby's stuff because, well - it's easy to correct him, because he's always supervised around baby. Once, Storm picked up a pacifier I dropped on the floor and was running around with it in his mouth (just like a baby would hold it). It was the most ridiculous sight to see and I regret no photo. Recently, Storm started to eye up a ball and stuffed toy in a wagon in the living room, but with a simple verbal reminder (uh uh), he stopped. People say to bring baby's hat or blanket from the hospital, etc so dog can smell. Personally, I didn't allow Storm near baby much -- no need to. Also changed where/how Storm rides in the car (before baby arrived). Some say, any changes in the dog's routine, where he is allowed to go, etc. -- make before baby arrives. I did use a big comforter to make it easy for baby to play on the floor (to cover the cat and dog hair on the rug). Cleaner and never know about allergies. If you have carpet in baby's room and pets have been in there, I'd replace it. Also used a HEPA air filter in baby's room and in the main room of the house. After seeing all the dust it collected I'm glad we got them -- Sears Kenmore brand -- works great.

In my 20yrs in pro training. Most( I said most not all) Chesapeakes just don't make good derby dogs. Especially when they are spread out all over the country. I have a couple of dogs we could run,but Oregon is out of the question for me. That may be why it's hard sometimes filling a field at a specialty. Chesapeakes generally mature to slow to make derby dogs I said gernerally not the rule. They will not take the training most young labradors willin a short amount of time. I have had very few chesapeakes that were good derby dogs, but made nice qual and all age dogs. One more thing about the set-ups I've run triples and have run retired guns in the derby also. So it's not just doubles. Just my two cents on the subject. Mike

The same way the baby's things are off limits to the dog, should work in reverse once baby starts crawling etc. Boundaries are important, so the dog has his own toys, beds etc. that are off limits to the baby. On a side note, very close friends of ours just had a their first child. They were over with the baby and she started fussing, it was dinner time. So mom was making the bottle and apparently my Lily thought it was taking much too long. She came to get mom twice, as if to say "Um helloo...baby crying". Then she stood a attention until the baby calmed down. Once she did, Lily lay down at mom's feet quite content.

I would not really agree that "This is the piece of the puzzle that is missing." 'Field' people are mentoring. As everyone knows, training for FT or even HT takes alot of time. I have found if it's something you want to do, "YOU" have to take the initiative and contact 'field' people and ask to train with them, etc. And yes, most are very nice and willing to help, you just have to ask. So, I think 'field people' are willing to mentor and are doing it, 'YOU'just have to ask. I know a handful of very experienced 'field' people who are very willing to talk on the phone and/or via email. I've done it. True for us too. Storm would get very excited when our baby son cried and would insist on our attention, for example when baby was waking up crying. I do repeatedly break one boundary though, letting Storm clean up dropped food on the floor around the high chair. Saves me from sweeping! But I think Storm and our son have some kind of side deal, because baby will drop his food repeatedly when dog is in sight. The cat also helps clean up but only likes fruit.

ACC Members, Since Melissa mentioned that the AKC representative position was open,I inquired of a Board member today if they thought I should look into it. Imagine my surprise when I learned that a person's name had ALREADY been forwarded to the Board for voting on tonight!!!! Someone who already will hold two other major positions as of Oct 1. Since the availability of the position was not made KNOWN to the membership until less than 2 weeks ago; 2) with an election for president, this appointment should be in the hands of whoever wins. This appointment should be withdrawn until after October 01. So candidates, Angie & JoAnn what do you both think ? Well, I guess all of the recent posts were all lip service-asking for members' input, etc. etc. Reminds me of the Pa legislature that voted themselves a pay raise in the middle of the night and at the end of the term. Voters got even and turned out a number of them next election. And ACC members, if YOU think this appointment at this time is inappropriate call or email the Officers & Board members ASAP and let them know how you feel. The Board meeting is tonight so let your thoughts be known. Things like this are the REASON there is currently an election in the club. lets hope they do and that they will mentor at the Nationals this month. but I agree with Lisa more mentoring has to be done on all levels no matter what the event is in order to get new people involved I have found that sometimes people are afraid to approach some of the big time people in any event feeling that they won't take the time. I never see certain people on the message boards. I know that sometimes it is difficult to find the time to go on these boards and reach out to people. So maybe they could pick a day to go on a board and see if newbies are looking for some advise. However, a certain person you listed only knocks and critizes people, to my knowledge has never encouraged anyone to get started.

the conformation people to my knownledge don't knock the field people, in fact they are the group that bands together for the field people when they are looking to dual CH a dog. We enter dogs to help build the points, majors, and assist on showing their dogs for them. I agree Dyane and several people were headed in the right direction on your legitimate question and we had better all get along and band together otherwise there will be no field events or breeding if PETA, Doris Day, and HSUS have their way. The field people will find themsevles importing dogs from foreign countries or getting their puppies on the black market. I think this dead horse has been beaten long enough and people should stick to original topics instead of immediately causing a civil war.

"I have found that sometimes people are afraid to approach some of the big time people in any event feeling that they won't take the time." - can't fault 'field' people for that "I never see certain people on the message boards." - I can't really blame people for that. With all the misunderstandings that happen with 'internet chat'. "However, a certain person you listed only knocks and critizes people, to my knowledge has never encouraged anyone to get started." - quite obvious you are referring to Keith Carlson. How do you know he has never encouraged anyone to get started. Just because you had a huge 'blowout' with him, that's quite an assumption to make by just using what happened on this board between you and him to come to that conclusion. I actually know for a FACT he gets frequently emailed from people that only post on this board.

And to think I actually used to enjoy ole KC & the Sunshine Band's posts. But lately his posts including this one are so bitter and full of vitriol it's hard to take them or him seriously. I told myself when he vociferously trashed my Puffin/Dance litter on the internet I would refrain from responding to any of his posts but I'm going to break that silence today. RE the Utah numbers: What would be wrong with simply stating the encouraging numbers, why not leave the rest of it out? And besides the anti-show vitriol we have this tired ole song...get out the violin.... "I have an AA dog and you don't" (::insert eye roll emoticon here::) this is encouraging to newbies, how? Keith CArlson may be a perfectly nice guy but no one would ever know it by his posts on the board--and by the way that QAA dog he brags about owning? Ask him who trained it/ran it to that status, cause it wasn't him, he bought her that way. Sounds like he's got a nice pup--well, I do too and so do some other people and right now I'm sure mine looks just as much like it could be an FC/AFC as his does. Oh and a few others of that breeding he was so scathing about happen to think the same thing. ANd for him it's not enough to promote the nice breedings he and those few in his inner sanctum have done. He has to trash other dogs and handlers in the process--this I truly don't get, but I guess it makes him feel better. Top titled dogs, I might add, whose owners have never been anything but encouraging to new people who want to start out. How, I ask, does this help the breed or encourage more people to try what is in essence a long, hard, lonely road? And oh yes, I've heard ole KC tried to have a training day and no one but John Norris came...now I think I know why. What I really don't get (nor do I care)is the venom and lies he spews forth whenever my or my dogs' name is mentioned since really, in the big scheme of things I'm just a nobody who loves the breed and wants others to enjoy their dogs also. BUt it's kind of funny that he puts forth so much effort in the "hate Julie" campaign--I'd think that time and energy would be better spent training his own dogs. You do not encourage people to put forth that extra effort that field training takes by trashing them (and/or their dogs) for their chosen pursuit and in fact by finger pointing and name calling you make the breed look bad and for that YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED. My feeling is...if they show, they're already a little more motivated than 90 percent of the dog owners out there so they're good candidates to come to training days and perhaps try some HTs. What's wrong with a WD or JH or even a puppy stakes? We all have to start somewhere. The biggest detriment IMO is so few people hunt anymore, especially young people so you have to get them out and see how the dog comes alive when it picks up a duck for the first time--even if it takes 45 min. of teasing and creativity to get it to pick up a duck! We had 2 dozen, mostly beginners here last year at the first ACC field day. This one that's next Sunday, should be even better and we have a real "all star" line up of help including people who have done their own training to MH, QAA, AFC and National Finalist, and those that have bred them. Yet prbably well over half the dogs attending will never even have seen, let alone picked up a duck and their owners have never touched a gun. Now how willing do you think they'd be to travel in some instances from 5 states away if they were trashed and made to feel stupid because they don't hunt, hunt test or field trial? Or heaven forbid, they've actually shown their dog???? Or because some of the people that will be here have actually had all age dogs which most of these attendees never will? I think Kent put it best when he said that the dogs wouldn't be anything if the PEOPLE do not get out and train them so field, show or nothing breeding, any one of this year's crop of pups could have what it takes but only a tiny fraction will get a chance to try. For that we need to encourage the PEOPLE.

"Ask him who trained it/ran it to that status, cause it wasn't him, he bought her that way." - Keith currently has 2 QAA dogs. Yes, one he did not train, and Keith has NEVER said otherwise or even 'hinted' that they were both trained by him. The other one, he did train himself. Also, your statement - "I have an AA dog and you don't". Keith does not do this. Actually, quite the opposite. "when he vociferously trashed my Puffin/Dance litter on the internet" - Julie, c'mon you're not innocent here either. You did quite a 'bashing' on RTF on his dog's line as well. "What I really don't get (nor do I care)is the venom and lies he spews forth whenever my or my dogs' name is mentioned since really, in the big scheme of things I'm just a nobody who loves the breed and wants others to enjoy their dogs also." This is precisely why I advocate publishing meeting agendas before the meetings so that members have a chance for input. And it only seems fair that if a position exists, that it should be put before the membership with enough time for the members to respond if interested. Otherwise there is the appearance that the person is already chosen and there was no need for others to apply. I would also think that no matter who is elected in the upcoming elections, that major club business should wait until the new board and officers are seated. Not in the last two weeks remaining in the term of office of the current officers and board. So much for communication!! Members need to let their board members know how they feel about this. Unfortunately there are only a few hours to respond, but an email can be sent in an instant. JoAnn

Wouldn't go overboard on the dust, air filter thing for baby's room. It's been pretty well documented that kids who grow up in environments with a moderate amount of dust, pet dander, and the like are FAR LESS LIKELY to develop asthma or allergies. Apparently kids brought up in hyperclean environments have immune systems that are too highly sensitized to airborne irritants. Life is full of surprises.

I agree with your statement that trying to keep a hyperclean environment in many ways is worse for your child than beneficial. (I'm not saying that was what Paul was advocating the "hyperclean environment".) Plus, we have two dogs and two cats, our kids are going to have to be immune! :) We have hardwood floors and keep things pretty swept up, so it's never out of control. Don't understand why anyone is surprised...this has pretty much been the way things have gone since I became a member, no matter who the Board had sitting on it at the time... As far as elections, I too agree that we should be given a SLATE of at least 2 approved candidates for each position open so that it is a TRUE election. All we do now, barring a situation where we have a petitioned candidate as in this time, is spend money for printing, postage and such to endorse the already-made decisions. My question about the nominating committee is this: if you have to be approved to be on it, and you have to approve people to be candidates, how do we ever get "new" blood in there??? It looks like a never-ending circle of people who choose people they know and on and on...

Please, Dyane, before posting something so inflammatory to a public forum, get the facts straight. **There is no vote on the ACC AKC Delegate position during this evening's Board teleconference.** There is NO MOTION before the Board to vote or approve anyone yet - the Board member you spoke with gave you incorrect information and did not read/understand their mailing very well (have then look closely at the voting page - NOTHING on it about approving a Delegate). There is an appointment questionnaire included in the September mailing FOR DISCUSSION ONLY. Any interested parties may still inquire to the position and submit resumes, the Board has no intention of approving anyone until ALL those who have expressed interest have a chance to submit their information and resumes. I do not anticipate the Delegate position will be approved and filled for the next few months, most certainly by the next group of Officers and Directors. If anyone is interested in the Delegate position (or any other!), I am more than happy to forward the ACC appointment questionnaire form, please contact me directly. melissa

This was my response, "Kerrie, you stated "I have read multiple posts (here and elsewhere) from field trailers who say conformation folks are ruining the integrity of the breed. And, I've read conformation folks say the opposite - that field trialers are ruining the integrity of the breed." Kerrie, can you or anyone name me a Field trialer that is ruining the integrity of the breed and how they are going about it?? Thanks, Scott " I never said I thought she believed anything, I just asked her or anyone else to name me someone and how they are ruining the breed. I just like people, if they can, to substantiate a claim of what they may have heard or read. Kerrie may not know who said what, and that is fine, but I was just asking. I think it is important that people back up what they say or write. For instance, Dyane wrote: "I agree with Lisa that too much FT breeding except for a handful of people is focused on titles and an ever smaller and less diverse pedigree lineage. Quite a nice accomplishment and message about the dogs." Dyane, could you or anyone name the several MH's the breeding of Willow and Rusty produced? I only count 2, which is fantastic, but not several, which is more than 2. Also, this breeding has claimed to produce a All Age Qualified dog, can anyone produce this dog? We may, myself included, make mistakes in our understanding of a fact, we are human, that is why people should produce facts to back up a claim or if they can't, not write about it. Scott

I do think that gradual exposure helps with Pets. I was very allergic to dogs in the past, would break out in rash but since having my own dog, those reactions eventually stopped. Research studies do show that children raised in multiple pet households are less likely to develop allergies. You're right, I wasn't advocating hyperclean -- which is impossible in most homes with children and/or pets. For me, the air filter (especially changing the air furnace filter on schedule) helps cut down on dirt/dust. Not stopping any disease/allergies there. But for asthma/allergy patients, air filters can help. Congrats Again!!! But one does have to be very careful with pets, feces, etc. not only your own home but especially in public areas. Handwashing is critical with very serious and common infant viruses -- rotavirus, RSV, etc. Handling raw meat safely is another important thing. Of course, while you're pregnant, you don't have to clean the kitty's litter box. The link below has a good summary of animal transmitted illnesses. http://kidshealth.org/teen/infections/fungal/pet_infections.html http://kidshealth.org/teen/infections/fungal/pet_infections.html

I've attempted to build on what I have in Brave and Merry (Merry is a daughter of Brave's sister and a CH/MACH herself with a son that has JAMmed twice this summer in Quals. There was no FT lines in the sire of her first litter. I attempted to breed Merry to Brave but the AI didn't take. I bred Brave's daughter to Canvas. I bred Merry to CuttyHunk ( who has a lot of FT breeding in him). I also bred Cola twice, once to Merry's brother and once to Brave's son. And while I'm tired of breeding at the moment I have enough animals out there to choose from when I do and still have frozen on Brave. While not a FT breeder I am contributing to preserving the breed

you know .. was just reading the posts below about trainability in our dogs and the thread that resulted from it. There is always the adage thrown in about the Chessie versus the Lab.. we all have fun with that one because WE have chessies and THEY have labs (or goldens or spaniels or pointers..and any other doggiedoodle out there) :c) You know.. the reason on one (who has any other breed) has such nasty things to say about OUR breed is BECAUSE of what they SEE. you are all talking about CHALLENGE when it comes to our breed.. "I like the challenge of a dog who thinks for himself..makes up his own mind in given situations..bla bla ) and what the OTHER doggiedoodle people think is.. "What hard headed stupid dogs..WHY own one when I can train mine so easy!" In all reality.. if our dogs are such challenges for the most part to get past the age old chesapeake bay retriever mentality.. WE are the stupid ones to keep breeding such difficult to train dogs because we like something at multitasks. But in all reality.. many other breeds do the same thing as our dogs do and do it well. There are hard headed multitasking Labradors and Goldens as well as other breeds. What makes our Breed so attractive to us is that they are on the same page as most of their owners and vice versa. We get along with them, we enjoy them and we love them for what they are. But that doesnt make them any better than the lab or golden etc... each person needs their own breed. But each to their own.. I dont like to bash other breeds just because we are proud of our own..but each breed has its merits where it belongs. But I feel tha Lab is as good as any other breed of dog just as much as if it was raised the same as our dogs. There are good owners and poor owners. A chessie in the wrong hands can suffer as much as the Lab/golden/ spaniels..etc.. I have two I am fostering until I can find them homes. From the looks of it..I may not be able to. Where I live I wouldnt find them a home here..but in the State of Alaska..to find them a proper home I think is prit near impossible for where I live. I am 326 miles from Anchorage.. 210 miles from Fairbanks and nothing but small towns (very few) inbetween. The male has had 7 years to just BE a dog..he knows to sit but he doesnt listen and all he knows is rocks and destroy his water dish after a few laps of water. Keeping water in front of him is going to be impossible. I have to water his food down to make sure he gets enough water. The female is 3 and she has no concept of listening or responding to commands of any type and she is VERY resistant to listening to anything..she is friendly to me and loving..but if she was turned loose..she would be gone and there is no catching her up after that. I found that out in the large kennel attatched to my house. I turned her loose in there and all she wanted was to escape and run. She refused to come to her name and she avoided my attempts to catch her. I finally did ..but not because SHE wanted me to. Outside on the choke and lead rope I had her on.. she was focused on "over there" instead of right here by me.. she wouldnt listen to her name (I dont know if she really even knows her name) and she kept trying to get away off the choker and run.. you could see she was rejecting everything. They are both going to be VERY hard to rehome in this condition. They are healthy otherwise..just totally untrained and not at all like my dogs. Mine are such a pleasure..even Journey for the crazy dog that he is. But these are going to take a LOT of work and with winter coming on and no place to keep them in the house.. they will have to remain in the Sled dog lot and taken off when I have time. But I felt it was better than going to the Shelter and being put to sleep. I honestly didnt know that they were this AWOL in the head. but its sad.. what I am getting at is this..they are no different than any other dog breed where they stand now. The are handicapped from lack of socialized life. Im just rambling as I am thinking about all these things. thats all Kath

earlier in the thread the conversation was about FT dogs. John and Jim and Scott think that we are on opposite sides. We are not. I was just trying to say that most people don't want FT or show dogs, but we need to make sure that all the dogs we breed continue to have the attributes that allow them to axcel at both. When we breed in a vacuum nobody wins. I'm proud as hell when I read the FT news or see CBR's competing in field events. I don't know much about it, but I'm always proud. This is my breed and I'm always thrilled to see all that they can do.

What kind of connection do you have, DSL or Cable? Did you have the MAC Address and SN# registered with your ISP when you swapped out the modems? Do you have a NIC that would accept a cad5 cable (regular network cable) just in case you have a bad USB port? Do others in your area have internet access? What does "down" mean? If you type in ipconfig /all from a command prompt, does it give you an IP address (besides 192.168...)? If you have an IP address, have you tried to do a loopback test or ping a web address? George, Thanks for setting the record straight, and obviously your Brave is a very nice dog and an example of the breed that we should all be proud of. Like I posted before, we all make mistakes, but someone is claiming that your Brave is All age qualified. This mistake made about Brave should be taken off this person's homepage. With all due respect, there can be and usually is a significant difference between a dog that is All age qualified and a MH that jams one Q. I know Dyane's post was innocent and harmless but it was a nice example of how a slight embellishment, by someone other than her, can be used by one of the most studied people in this breed to make an innocent post. Scott, the facts that I published were exact and not embellished. Dyane did not breed or own the dogs represented, therefore, as do most people she generalized. To criticize in this instance is petty at best! If I were at work, I would print the name and titles of all the dogs that all 5 of these Meadowood dogs produced as it's on my computer at work and I am home for the week. As for Brave, George can speak for the number of bitches he's been bred to, and I don't think it's probably more than 6 or 7 and 3 of the breedings have been to my own bitches. One of those breedings did produce a Ch/SH who I believe is or will be running for his MH and I know of at least one other Ch/JH, and that is just off the top of my head! The bottom line is that we don't need to justify anything and no one has the right to criticize what we've produced until they can top our records! Can you, or Keith Carlson, or Jim as you seem to be the people criticizing and I can't find where you guys have come even close to what we've done! Have a nice night....I'm off to go train my nice little performance prospect! Kathy

At the time I wrote that I thought that is what two stars after the name meant. I have long since been corrected and didn't realize that my home page still said that. Mea Culpa! Kathy

George, Your accomplishments with Brave are very nice and I agree with what you say about the merits of each dog, regardless of titles. However, most FT breeders are breeding dogs with Ch in their pedigree contrary to the myth perpetuated by many on this site. My bitch, considered FT breeding by most, Dual breeding by me, has 8 show Ch in her 4 generation pedigree, 3 Dual CH, Chase has 8 and Rudy has 9 Ch's compared to Kathy's Rusty which has 11. To believe that FT dogs don't have Ch in their pedigree and that most FT breeders don't breed with the standard in mind is absurd. Decks, Chase and Rudy are producing DC, AFC's and show Ch's. Chase alone is one of the top 10 producers of show Ch's, last I checked. He also appears in many of the current FT breedings. The FT breeders are holdin up their end of the bargain. Scott

OTOH, you are talking about people who are already bitten by the bug, and are looking for training advice. We need more outlets to introduce people to field events and all that they entail. And yes, that means the trialers, with their wonderfully well-trained dogs need to participate. I got the bug when I went to my first training day in CA many moons ago. The field trialers always showed up, and we had an "advanced" stake that was essentially what one could only call a meld between MH and QAA level work (there were no HT back then). It was great to see what a dog can actually be trained to do, and gave everyone else something to aspire to. Many of us got the bug that way. How you gonna make sure the future generations get the bug? Lisa

Regarding where our dogs come from - we also have purchased from Mr. Scott Sherman, Mr and Mrs. Mac Dubose, Mr. Pat Kenny, Mr. Newt Cropper, Mr. John Thomas, Ms. Marge Samuels, Mr. Marvin Blount - the list goes on - what exactly is your point here? Regarding my comments: 1 - Yes, we are "outsiders" - considering this was our first post - goes to show you how amazed we were with the brash and arrogant tone from the Field Peakes post. Also, we have a 5 month old Chessie Female - still getting our feet wet there. 2 - Regarding the "Kettle calling the Pot Black" - since this was posted attached while quoting our post I am again confused - having no history on the board. 3 - And Finally - what bothers me most - "that's not what I meant" - and I will take this to the singular - I stand by my words - this is EXACTLY where I am coming from - no hidden words - no hidden agenda - I am thrilled to own a Chessie that I feel has the talent to title in both the ring and field - a luxury that does not exist in the Lab world. Now you know where I am coming from.

I'm not the only one who "gets" the tone of Keith Carlson's posts of late and it's all "NYA NYA NYA, I have an AAQ Peake and you don't". Have as in own/train/run--semantics. Why not be satisfied with having nice dogs (and of course giving credit where it's due on one of them?) Why add all this other stuff? Truly I don't need to badmouth ole KC, he does a fine job of that without my help. But for the record, I NEVER bashed his or anyone else's dogs' pedigree. We can, however, let people judge that for themselves. I've provided a link to the discussion on RTF you refer to. It's lengthy and same-ole, same-ole, but if you start on page 5 you will find a question from me--and a bit of righteous indignation over the patronizing, cavalier non-answer I got. NO dog or pedigree insults whatsover. You will find on that thread quite a few insults, venom and barbs thrown--but not by me. Here it is, for anyone interested. Wanting to be with the "in crowd"? I don't know. I do know that regionalism, sportism, etc. can only be harmful in a breed with an effective breeding population as small as ours. Sometimes, we Chessie breeders can't get out of our own way. Maybe the best stud dog for your bitch belongs to someone you detest. Get over it, and do the breeding anyway is my philosophy! Lisa

  • Exactly Why... It is not possible&Dyane Baldwin, Brian Cox, ChesacolaREMOVE@aol.com, September 12, 2006 at 08:38:56
I have been sitting here quietly on the sidelines watching and reading as the supporters for both sides have attacked and tried to discredit the candidates and each other but after Dyane Baldwin's latest stunt it is time for me to speak up. I will address JoAnn Colvin's post first and then Dyane. JoAnn: Publishing board meeting agendas is a great idea and I believe it was at the top of your "Our Vision Statement" but if you would have done your research you would know it cannot be done. It would be illegal under the California Electronics Code which basically states that you cannot publish any official club business electronically because the information has to go to every member and not all club members are online or have Internet access so it is not possible to do. All club business has to be printed in the bulletin because is sent to all the members and it would not be economically feasible for the club to mail every member a letter with a copy of the voting page every month. Also as a past board member you know that sometimes you don't even know what you will be voting on until a week or so in advance and that would not give all members enough time to respond. On the other hand If I'm not mistaken voting results could be published electronically because that information will be published in the bulletin for all the members and that would fall under communication which is the secretaries job. As you know it is the presidents job to be the leader and to delegate making sure that everyone is doing their job and to find out why and help to correct the problem if they are not. Angie and the current board have been criticized for lack of communication among other things by your supporters but if members haven't come forward (until this election) and voiced their concerns or issues or the president doesn't alert the board about any problems and help find solutions as how to fix them then how can the board members not think that everything is fine and dandy? In one of your earlier posts you said that you brought up some issues at the meeting in Maryland and that Angie must have been there since she was on the board. You knew or should have known she was giving the judges seminar going on at the same time but the night before we sat at the bar and had drinks with you and Jim and several other club members if you had some issues why did you not discuss them with Angie then who was sitting right beside you? (no need to answer) I know you and Angie and Jim and I are pretty damn tired of all the crap that has been flying about coming from all sides and are just waiting for the outcome of this election to be decided and then whichever one of you is elected can go about the business of trying to correct the problems that have existed and persisted in the club for many years. Well, now the time has come for me to voice my opinions on Dyane's latest stunt and I'm sorry it is not going to pretty. I bet all of you who wrote to the board members and to the other lists wish you had gotten all the facts now instead of jumping when Dyane says jump. This is just another typical example (and there have been many over the years) of how Dyane operates sneaky, underhanded, manipulative are a few words that come to mind she has her little spies and informants on every committee and the board and has to try and control everything that goes on in the club only this time she got caught publicly. JoAnn I believe that this is one of the reasons that you have been so blatantly attacked you are being perceived as guilty by association it is obvious that some members see your close association with Dyane and figure that if these are the methods and tactics she uses then you must be quilty of using them too. Dyane always says she gets no appreciation for the work she has done for the club, and she has done some damn nice work, but its the way she goes about it that turns people against her. She is sweet and nice when she wants something from you or when she tries to get you to do something for her but if you don't do it or don't do it to her satisfaction then she will hold a grudge against you and persecute you every chance she gets. If she wants to control the club then why doesn't she run for president? Because she would much rather try to control people from behind the scenes. So those of you who are fans of the good ole boy backroom politics where someone else is controlling the strings looks like you got a taste of what's to come if Joanne, Kathy and Yvette are elected. Also JoAnne here is a little piece of advice if I were you I would try to distance myself from Dyane because if you are elected you are going to have a long hard rocky row to hoe. Angie has no idea that I have written or posted this and when she finds out we will undoubtedly have an argument so wheather you all believe what I say is true or not don't let the wool be pulled over your eyes. Brian Cox

This was sent to me by a friend who found it in an old Dear Abby column. You may have seen it before but I thought it nice to share: A Dog's Prayer by Beth Norman Harris Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me. Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do. Speadk to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footsteps falls uplon my waiting ear. When it is cold and wet, please take me inside, for I am now a domesitcated animal, no longer used to bitter elements. And I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth. Though had you no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in all the land, for you are my god and I am your devoted worshiper. Keep my pan filled with frest water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life should your life be in danger. And, beloved, master, should the great Master see fit to deprive me of my health or sight, do not turn me away from you. Rather, hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grand me the mecrciful boon of eternal rest -- and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands.

I'm not going into anything here, as we will have to agree to disagree, however, I do remember speaking to Angie while having drinks and we did talk about some ACC business but it was more about standard revision and we came to some pretty similar conclusions. And, I would have guessed the President would have brought up concerns from the meeting for the Board to address. I didn't know who was doing the seminar as it was for future judges, not the membership.I do believe that items can be posted on the ACC list as long as they are included in the Bulletin as well. Actually I believe it's been done before. And if CA laws are that restrictive, maybe it's time to look elsewhere. I have heard that CA will be having some major tax increases for non-profit organizations, but that is for accountants and lawyers to look into. As far as Dyane, well I'm just speechless! Putting in a resume and deciding to run on petition was all done on my own and actually no one knew until after the fact. Anyone who knows me will tell you that I absolutely have a mind of my own, for good or bad, I make my own decisions. We do certainly agree we are tired of all this and looking forward to Sept. 25. And this club deserves the best efforts of whomever is elected in any and all positions. JoAnn

Sorry I spelled your name wrong. Anyway, here's what I was able to find. Let me know if you have other references. From what I can gather, distributing Board agendas electronically would be perfectly permissible under California's Corporation Code. Lisa "20. "Electronic transmission by the corporation" means a communication (a) delivered by (1) facsimile telecommunication or electronic mail when directed to the facsimile number or electronic mail address, respectively, for that recipient on record with the corporation, (2) posting on an electronic message board or network which the corporation has designated for those communications, together with a separate notice to the recipient of the posting, which transmission shall be validly delivered upon the later of the posting or delivery of the separate notice thereof, or (3) other means of electronic communication, (b) to a recipient who has provided an unrevoked consent to the use of those means of transmission for communications under or pursuant to this code, and (c) that creates a record that is capable of retention, retrieval, and review, and that may thereafter be rendered into clearly legible tangible form. However, an electronic transmission by a corporation to an individual shareholder or member under this code is not authorized unless, in addition to satisfying the requirements of this section, the transmission satisfies the requirements applicable to consumer consent to electronic records as set forth in the Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act (15 U.S.C. Sec. 7001(c)(1))." "5079. "Written" or "in writing" includes facsimile, telegraphic, and other electronic communication as authorized by this code, including an electronic transmission by a corporation that satisfies the requirements of Section 20." "5015. Any reference in this part, Part 2 (commencing with Section 5110), Part 3 (commencing with Section 7110), Part 4 (commencing with Section 9110), or Part 5 (commencing with Section 9910) to the time a notice is given or sent means, unless otherwise expressly provided, (a) the time a written notice by mail is deposited in the United States mails, postage prepaid; or (b) the time any other written notice, including facsimile, telegram, or other electronic mail message, is personally delivered to the recipient or is delivered to a common carrier for transmission, or actually transmitted by the person giving the notice by electronic means, to the recipient; or (c) the time any oral notice is communicated, in person or by telephone, including a voice messaging system or other system or technology designed to record and communicate messages, or wireless, to the recipient, including the recipient's designated voice mailbox or address on such a system, or to a person at the office of the recipient who the person giving the notice has reason to believe will promptly communicate it to the recipient." "(2) Regular meetings of the board may be held without notice if the time and place of the meetings are fixed by the bylaws or the board. Special meetings of the board shall be held upon four days' notice by first-class mail or 48 hours' notice delivered personally or by telephone, including a voice messaging system or by electronic transmission by the corporation (Section 20). The articles or bylaws may not dispense with notice of a special meeting. A notice, or waiver of notice, need not specify the purpose of any regular or special meeting of the board."

Actually, I agree with Brian for those items requiring a *membership* vote. Anything requiring a vote of the membership should be sure to be sent to all members. However, we are talking about something being voted on by the *board*, and such items need only be sent to the *board*. Any other notification sent to the membership, would be a nice gesture, a *plus*. Since it would be done purely for informational purposes (not requiring a vote by the *membership*), absolute blanket coverage of the membership would not be necessary. Electronic distribution would be as simple as setting up a distribution list for the Secretary. The list would include the ACC-L address, plus any addresses of members who do not subscribe to ACC-L, but would wish to receive Board agendas electronically. Lots of hunters think they have to have a FT pedigree. That's because they read it in books or hear it on videos and DVDs. They don't understand the the FT pedigree paradigm applies to Labs and Goldens, not necessarily Chessies. I think it's part of our job to educate prospective puppy buyers that we don't have the breed split that other breds have, and a good solid line of working dogs can exist without a liberal sprinkling of FCs in the pedigree. If I were buying a Lab, you'd better believe I would be looking for an exclusively FC pedigree. No pigadors need apply! LOL! Thankfully, we don't have the problem in our breed. Lisa

I often get the standard I don't want a show dog mantra. Yes, it is usually from advice based on the other breeds. However, it is also lack of understanding and a buyers way of trying to let the litter owner know their intentions. If you actually get in and ASK questions and share information, many owners are surprised they DO want a show quality dog. What they DO NOT want is a dog with a bunch of strings attached. They do not want to be required to show, have a co-owner, be required to produce a litter or on of many other things that are often attached to the promising puppy. It is also often a way of saying they have a budget. Some folks charge varying prices for different individuals in a litter. When I hear this in my phone converstions, it tells me more questions and info are required. Many a home are looking for the SAME type puppy I am. In the CBR world that often makes them show dogs or competetive activity contenders. Shannon

George, on Saturday, Catherine had a major ring conflict but did get Cane in for the class and Winners. Dana took him back in for Best of Breed. As for Annie, which is who I'm sure you were referring to....she is NOT a client's dog, but rather Catherine's and mine and Catherine was concerned that if she also tried to show Annie and Twist, that she wouldn't make her CLIENT'S committment to the AmStaff ring to show the bitch that she finished that day because she did show her. Besides, there is nothing that said that David, Catherine or I could or couldn't show Annie, or that we could OR couldn't put her on anyone else for that matter. Kinda makes me wonder why you are so concerned! I thought David did a lovely job of showing her so I asked him if he would show her again on Sunday to take some of the stress off of Catherine....after all, David is related since he shows Annie's father. What would you do? The conformation show you are entered in has a Best Puppy award. You own 2 of the entrants. Each, a dog and a bitch, wins their 9-12 class division. The bitch 9-12 class had 3 puppies entered, so your bitch pup beat the other two to win the class. The Puppy dog (who went RWD) was on his own insofar as other dog puppies as there were none and he was beaten by the Open dog for WD. The puppy 6-9 class had one puppy bitch who won her class and went on to Reserve Winners Bitch in the regular judging. You are prepared to go back in for Best Puppy with your dog puppy, but felt your bitch puppy had already been defeated when the other puppy bitch went Reserve Winners Bitch. However, as the Best of Breed competition was wrapping up the ring steward told the exhibitors outside the ring that all the first place puppies were to come back after the Best of Breed competition for judging for the Best Puppy, and she called everyone back by exhibitor number. Do you go back in anyway even if you have the bitch defeated by the 6-9 puppy for RWB? Or do you point out to the ring steward that winner of the 9-12 puppy bitch class had already been defeated when the 6-9 puppy took Reserve Winners and decline to go back in the ring? Inquiring minds just want to know what other people would have done. Kathy P.S. And, yes, even though all 3 puppies were taken back into the ring to compete against each other as instructed by the steward, the judge did award Best Puppy to the puppy who had already taken RWB (and she is a lovely puppy and deserving of the award).

Its not that he did anything huge..but what he did..he did true to form and I think it made a difference for the moment. I work at the main local Resturant as Janitor at night. Luckily for once I was almost done the same time the Kitchen guys were getting done. However they were out of the door and gone home when I still had one section of floor to wash before I could go. I am not allowed to wash the floor while they are there. Anyhow.. I was vacuming the main dining room when I seen this fellow in hunting camo at the front door , he was looking in. Mind you, we are closed..and had been close for a couple hours. But most people when they see the sign with the hours on it..they go away..but this fellow was not.. I kept an eye on him out of the corner of my eye while I vacumed.. he was at the door a LOT longer than I thought was normal.. then he was gone..but then I seen him at the other door..there are two entrances. Again..he was acting strangely..so much so that I shut off the vacum and went into the kitchen to look over the ledge and yet not be seen myself hopefully.. my friends husband who is cook there was asking me what I was looking at..so I told him. But presently I didnt see the man anymore..so I went back to vacuming. Then the cook told me that one of his guys talked to the man and said he was drunk and was wanting a ride to Juneau. Like .. HELLOOOOOOOOOO??? Juneau is a long ways away from Tok!! Anyhow... I was a lil nervous.. the cook said if they leave and he is still around call 911 and ask for the Troopers to come down. I said to the Cook..my luck he will be in Northway (1 hour east of Tok). So I seen the man walking back towards the bar which is across the parking lot a lil ways..but its closed. I dont see him for a while and then the kitchen staff finally closed up and went home. They did look for the man before they left and the one said he seen him over by the bar. So they left and not more than 2 minutes went by when the man came back to the front of the resturant door.... I ducked down behind the wall and snuck into the kitchen. I can see my truck parked on the side nearest me through the windows.. and pretty soon I see the man walk to the front of my truck and he stops.. thats when Britt did his good Ol American bred Chesapeake Duty... He was on alert and started to bark in the truck!!!! the guy stood there a few moments longer and then walked away. I did call 911 (which is in Fairbanks) and told them my story...and I told them I wasnt going to walk out there alone ..because once the door is shut its locked and I cant get back inside. They finally rouse the one head Trooper and she said he would be calling me....took a good 10 minutes or so before he did and then he informed me that the Trooper on duty was dispatched to ... guess where? NORTHWAY!! I chuckled and told him thats exactly what I told the cook..he got a chuckle out of that. I told him I wasnt leaving out that door as I was the ONLY one there and its 2:30 am.. so he asked if I had a family member or someone nearer me than him..as he wasnt in uniform and it would take him longer to get in uniform and get down there. So I called the cook who lived across the highway a quarter mile away.. since I figured he was still up ..and he was.. so bless his heart..he came over and waited till I got in my truck. I did see the man though while waiting for the cook..he WAS in front of the resturant or hanging around the building. Then he staggered across the highway and into the shadows over there. But anyhow.. my excitment for the night.... one thing I dont like about working alone in that place. But good ol Britt let that guy know he wasnt allowed there. Normally I have anywhere from 2 -4 dogs in the truck..usually 2 though..and tonight I only had Britt with. I love my chessies!!! :c) Kath

I served on my City Council and in that context we were not permitted to send ordinances/resolutions on the internet. They needed to be posted on the front door of City Hall where all have equal access to seem them before a vote. Agendas which site the name and number of items to be voted upon are sent electronically by one of our Council Members to anyone who wishes to receive them. But they provide no real information about the issues at hand. I can't cite the code the governs the way my Council does this, but I agree with the reasons behind it. Everyone should have fair access to information that will allow them to weigh in on issues. Our problem (ACC's) is that no one has meaningful access to issues unless they have an inside connection with someone on the board. I'm sure there are solutions that improve upon this that don't involve excluding members who don't have internet access. Gina Downin

MOst of them end up looking like the example, he he. It's VERY hard to get the perfect water launch shot (and this is coming from someone who professionally photographed jumping horses!) Mea Culpa, Mea Culpa for not using the word "discussion" instead of vote. I still question a "lame duck" president for putting a discussion of two applicants for ACC AKC delegate on the agenda. For what purpose?! And, with apparently two other people in the wings also thinking of/or sending resumes for the position. And I still question these names being before the Board for “discussion”, when the public announcement of the position’s opening was only recently made to the membership. Members should realize that any topic for discussion can be turned into a vote even if there was no formal pre-listed voting motion. As an example, the asterisk which appeared after each candidate’s name was approved during a discussion at the December 2000 teleconference. No formal voting motion was listed prior to the discussion. The use of the asterisks approval actually was never even assigned a motion #. Members need only read the minutes of the teleconference published in the ACC Bulletin to see this. I have no "spy" system as has been alleged-what an absurd idea! I simply ask questions occasionally to a board member who doesn’t feel all board business needs to be so confidential; and revealing what, if anything, went on at a teleconference. NO SPIES. NO INTRIGUE. A few weeks ago on this very board, Angie Cox suggested I work on my ideas regarding the show rules and SS judge selection. I declined saying it likely would be a waste of my time. I was right. On the recent agenda was a voting motion for changes to the show rules. All of this highlights the cusp of the difference in the candidate’s attitudes to how the club will be managed. By your votes, you will get the club you deserve. Dyane Permission to forward.

This lake we were at had a few docks and I tried getting Jake to jump off them. He would, but never in that dock-dog style. I'd walk him back to get a good running start, make him sit-stay. Then go to the end of the dock and throw the bumper out and release him. He'd run to the end of the dock and skid to a stop, then prance and whine, then just jump in. But with no style at all! LOL! But, I'm not trying to create a dock-dog anyway, we were just having fun. So later when he was just retrieving from shore (not dock) he found that spot in the lake with the drop off. He started doing these beautiful leaps. Tom's over fishing and I'm yelling "Tom, look at this!!" Needless to say, my husband and I are looking for some country (weekend) property on a private lake to build a small house. :) Traci

If the Bulletin were timely though important items and topic discussions could be printed there and electronically so all members can see what is going on. Like openings of important positions or rule changes or program changes, etc. Nothing about this stuff is ever so immediate. The ONLY thing for the ACC is that ALL members must have access to voting issues. Those are: approving changes to the standard, changes to the consitution, elections and dissolution of the club. You could not send out ballots electronically only for these. Dyane

"Everyone should have fair access to information that will allow them to weigh in on issues." Fair access is not the same thing as equal access. In your example of posting things on City Hall, this is fair, but certainly not equal. I say this, because those with monbility problems, people without vehicles to get them to City Hall, etc. would be left out of the process. It's just an example of how fairness and equality differ. You are never going to get 100% equal access to every individual. But utilizing the internet is "fair", in that a large number of members (better than 75%) have internet access listed in the directory (and many who do not have e-mail listings actually have e-mail; just choose to not make it public). It is "fair" because whether a person does or does not have access to the internet is primarily a choice, not a discrimination issue. The internet is available to all, not an elite few. Even people who cannot afford computers can use the public library, Kinko's or other access points. So, it is fair, just not equal. Nothing is equal. Those who do not have e-mail can certainly track things through the Bulletin as well. We just need to improve the Bulletin time schedule, so that it comes out regularly. Lisa

You can register any dog online, regardless of where you buy it. If Petland has set up their purchasing system so that people can register online at time of purchase, that has nothing to do with AKC. You could do the exact same thing at home, with your own computer. Just sit your puppy buyer down, hop on the internet, and guide them through the registration process. I actually think it's a good thing. So many dogs in this breed don't ever even get registered, because their owners don't need papers in the duck blind. I wish I had had this option open to me when I had my litters back when! Used correctly, it is a great educational tool. Lisa

If you receive the AKC Gazette, take a look at pg. 98. There has been a preliminary discussion on an AKC listing service for non-registerable mixed breed dogs. This opens the door for goldendoodles, puggles, and all those other designer dogs, maybe even chesadors? It states it will be further discussed in Oct. This is why the AKC Delegate position is so important, although AKC often bypasses the delegates when a new policy will add to the coffers. JoAnn

...where I disagree with JoAnn. (See, I am not just a bobble-head! LOL! Now that image is really funny, to those who know me!) If they insist on neuter/spay before listing, which I am sure they will do, as they have done for ILPs, then this isn't much of a problem. You can't stop people from breeding designer dogs; they are already doing it. But what this does do, as a plus, is allow people to participate in companion events (obedience, tracking, agility, rally). I think this is a great way to introduce people to the sport of purebred dogs. They get their feet wet showing their mixed breed (I did, back when I was a pre-teen!) and then they want to do more, conformation showing or performance events. Well, they will need to acquire a purebred for that, so the hook is set from that point forward. The Kennel Club in the UK has allowed mixes in their versions of companion events for many decades. Hasn't hurt their purebred dog activities. In fact, they have a much larger percentage of their population engaged in various dog sports than we do! Lisa

You can hardly turn on the news these days without another story about some celeb buying a puggle, or labradoodle, or one of the other spendy mutts. Although, I tend to agree with Lisa. If done right (mandatory spay/neuter, "registration number" only similar to ILPs that might state some generic thing like crossbred or other PC term for mongrel) it might be a very good tool to advance dog activities if they're then allowed to compete in performance events.

Puppy buyers always ask if the sire and dam are AKC registered but a lot of times they don't register their puppies. They see no need to. Also a lot of the commercial breeders that sell to pet shops have been suspended by the AKC, so they sell their puppies with registration to the other registries such as States Kennel Club Now you have the doodles and I think that is where AKC is wanting to list mixed breeds. Actually, the idea of allowing mixes in companion events has been brought up periodically for several decades. I myself "campaigned" for this when I was showing my mutt in fun match obedience. And it has been quite a few decades since I was a teenager! The difference that people are noticing is that AKC is now much more transparent. those other attempts to allow mixed breeds in obedience never got the attention of the public, because everything was closed-door until very recently. So nobody ever knew what the AKC board was considering, or what they voted on. no minutes were published. Certainly the discussion sessions of BoD and Delegates were never published, like they are now. So maybe those rumors need to be laid to rest. What has changed is the transparency. This isn't a new issue by a long shot. Certainly pre-dates the "doodles"! As far as AKC being concerned about money...well, I certainly hope so! Nothing is free, and AKC came dangerously close to having to file bankruptcy a couple of years ago. They have improved that considerably, but consider how your life would change if the only option you had was one of the bogus registries! Food for thought. Lisa

...ever ILP'd a dog? It isn't easy, and it isn't cheap. There aren't that many dogs that receive ILP numbers, because of this. I rather doubt that there will be many mixes that receive numbers, either. Most people are too lazy to jump through the hoops. And since they wouldn't be able to breed their little darlings, the only people who would take advantage of this are those seriously interested in competition. This isn't "registration", it is listing of the dog, so that it can be tracked during competitions, and receive a title certificate. It's this type of hysteria-mongering, frankly, that causes good ideas to get shot down. Witness spayed/neutered veterans, for instance. Lisa

AKc issues ILP numbers overall, not by breed. So each number is given out sequentially. Dog #300 could be a poodle, dog #301 could be a cocker, and so forth. In my database, I have all the titled dogs, including ILP ones. Now, the ILP program has been in existence for AT LEAST 30 years, probably closer to 40. I was ILPing dogs when I was a kid. In that time, a little over 100,000 ILP numbers have been issued. That's it, that's all. All breds, 30+ years. We are not talking about a huge numnber of dogs, here. Certainly not a significant revenue source for AKC! Lisa

I have no real objection to the ILP concept for mixed breeds, and have said this before....not much different than ILP for unregistered 'purebreds' as many of them are really mixed breeds anyway that look like a purebred. It forces the spay neuter concept and contributes to making responsible owners out of the people who are doing performance competition. I am a life member and Vice President of an AKC member obedience club. We certainly don't turn away people from our training classes because they have mixed breed dogs and in fact encourage them to register their dogs with the mixed breed dog clubs in hopes of promoting even more responsible ownership and the spay/neuter factor required of all dogs. A last comment is that by allowing these mixed breeds to join AKC on ILP registrations, you are also putting the owners in with the owners of mixed breed dogs and I can almost guarantee that many of these mixed breed owners will go with a registered purebred the next time after seeing what the dogs can do and talking to responsible owners and breeders. Just my two cents worth. Kathy

My roommate's first dog after she joined my obedience club was ILP'd. The dog was a Lab/Aussie mix out of her own aussie bitch who got bred to lord only knows what. Long story short, after Marcie joined County-Wide, she spayed the bitch's mother, ILP her bitch as a lab since that is exactly what she looked like, put an AKC CD on her along with a zillion agility titles, + Flyball dog Champion, then started competing in other agility venues with her. She ended up with a purebred Rottweiler after that who was registered earned her CD, and also followed suit in the other competition. Now she has a rescue Pap and a rescue Pomeranian. The pap is AKC Registered, the Pom will probably by ILP'd if Marcie decides to compete with her. A number of our club members started out the same way with mixed breeds that they either ILP'd or registered with the Mixed Breed Dog club. Now they have purebreds they compete with. I think that to object to this is snobbery to be perfectly honest as I've seen this system work time and again to the advantage of the purebred because it creates responsible owners who see what they can do in a very responsible way. Actually JoAnn, I think over time it will reduce the number of mixed breed mutts being bred because of the conversion over to the purebred side of the dogs once they owners are exposed to it through the AKC registry. When people stop buying the expensive mixed breeds and go to purebreds, the breeders of the mixed breeds will have no choice but to stop breeding or they will get stuck with all their puppies. Kathy

...it encourages people to go beyond just a CGC-level. If they get bitten by the dog-showing bug, they can't go beyond CGC with a mutt. So they stop there. Nothing to encourage them to try higher-level stuff, nothing to encourage them to stay in the sport. As far as a mixed-breed ILP encouraging breeding MORE doodles, I just don't see it. Breeders don't initiate ILP listings, the owner has to contact AKC directly to get the forms. So breeders can't sell them as "AKC". They'll stick to the bogus registries that will churn out "registration certificates" for entire litters with the push of a button. That way, the pups are "papered" when people come to see the litter. That doesn't happen with ILPs. In fact, there's no point in even contacting AKC until after the dog is spayed/neutered, which means several months of age, at least. So most people who sell doodles "with papers" aren't going to be attracted to AKC's program. I know breders went through their histrionics when ILP first came about. Positive this would cut into their business. Nothing could be further from the truth. Most people are blissfully unaware of the existence of the ILP program. I rather doubt that people say "Hey, I won't buy a registered puppy from X, I'll just get one from the newspaper and ILP it instead." Rather, those who utilize the ILP system are usually people with their first dog, one they got from the pound or a rescue group. Took it to obedience class, got amazed when they saw what the open/utility dogs could do, and decided to pursue AKC titles with their little "no-name" dog. Dog #2 is almost always something they buy from a breeder. Lisa

AKC has always been the registry of pure bred dogs. If they are in need of sheckels, then they should start up a subsidiary registry to register mutts, xbreeds, or Heinz57s what ever the PC term is. OR they could do like NAHRA does and issue a # which allows the dog to participate in ob, agility or whatever games are AKC sponsored and oben to ALL breeds. The ILP should be used as it has been to allow those who own an unregistered 'purebred' to compete in hunt tests or herding tests or whatever. Personally I do not want to see AKC become part and parcel to encouraging ownership of mixed breeds or worse yet getting involved in an enterprise that may encourage puppy buyers to buy from a source other than a reputable breeder.

See my other posts regarding this matter. "issue a # which allows the dog to participate in ob, agility or whatever games are AKC sponsored and oben to ALL breeds" This is the plan. The plan encompasses companion events, not performance events. So no HT, herding trials, or anything else. Just obedience, tracking, rally & agility, as I stated in my first post on this topic. Also, see my comments regarding ILP registration statistics. AKC lists less than 2,000 ILP dogs a year. Not a significant revenue source. This is not likely to change with the inclusion of mixed breeds. people who breed mixed breeds won't have a stack of ILP forms to hand out to their puppy buyers. The application has to be obtained directly from AKC, and it is a multi-stage (and expensive) process. Actually, this discussion is probably entirely moot. The ILP program costs the AKC money, doesn't generate it. So chances are, the BoD will not even turn this loose to the Delegates for a vote. It will probably get killed in BoD discussions as a nice idea, but not practical for a corporation that is still digging out of a financial hole. Lisa

Lisa, You are only guessing at how AKC would register these dogs. You don't know if they will require spay/neutering or not. You don't know if it will work similarly to an ILP number. It's all conjecture since they have not revealed their plan. But the AKC's mission statement is advancement of the sport of pure bred dogs, not register everything and make as much money as you can. I don't find this elitist. There are other registries for mixed breeds. Those that choose to have a mixed breed, pay a ton of money for it, and want it registered can use one of those. I have had several mixed breeds, all were free, and I thoroughly enjoyed them. Two of the best were a weim/choc. lab cross and a lab/golden cross, but I didn't expect them to compete at AKC events. And remember, AKC now has a conflict of interest policy so that their judges may not judge at some of these other registries, so it looks like a rather two-faced position on their part. JoAnn

We have several members who only have shelter mixes and the only thing our club provides for them is Flyball and a NADAC trial. Surprisingly, it is some purebred owners who are for this as a way to provide more for our "mix " members. There are also quite a few nice young potential ILP Peakadoodles on the Appalachian Coast that have been in advanced training. In addition, there are a number of field C-Doodles under a year old being trained right now as I write this that are out of "alternative" field breedings (see old school "Chesadors", Oh Yah!!!) that come from a very, very "LONG LINE" of productive Chesadoodles ILP FIELD TRIAL dogs...OK not to long?!? There are too many people I know to list that have a long history with the FIELD side of this breed that have young C-Doodles they are presently training. I also know of many first time trainers/owners that are working hard with their well bred FIELD 'doodles to compete not only in field trials but the hunt test venue. And there are numerous people I know looking for Chesadoodle FIELD pups, including several pros. We may not have the breed field trial numbers or diversity that was present 2 months ago (well, never hehe) but the FIELD side of the Chesapadoodle is alive and well. So be "SAD AND ANGRY" since most of us could care less what you think. Hi Traci! I used to post here a lot when I was active in rescue, but have been out of touch for the last several years..... busy with our 22 month old and 7 month old babies. We weren't obsessive about preparing our 3 chessies for the first baby's arrival. We brought her home from the hospital and let each dog sniff her. They were very interested when she cried or made noises, but it really didn't take them long to get used to her. We made it very clear that they were not allowed to jump up around her or get too close to her when she was little. They are smart...they are Chessies!!! Ours really seemed to understand that this new person was not a toy and was very important to us. Funny thing is, we have one Chessie who at 5 yrs old will eat ANYTHING, but he doesn't touch the kids' toys. I know that all our dogs would protect the children if necessary, but I would NEVER trust them alone with the kids. The most useful thing we did was purchase several baby gates for both the children's and dogs' protection. Good luck with your new baby!! Martha and family in NC

  • CA. Electronics code (from below), Brian Cox, chesacolaREMOVE@aol.com, September 13, 2006 at 21:58:38
JoAnn and all, Well looks like I was wrong and was given some incorrect information hmmmm must have been from a JoAnn supporter :-) lol and when I am wrong I will be the first to admit it. I apologize to all. I searched the CA. codes and did not find anything just as Lisa and George did so I emailed the ACC Legislative Liaison and the reply is below. Dyane, Anger Management LMAO now that was funny guess you do have a sense of humor afterall. Brian Cox I have a question for you about posting the board agenda and voting pages to the official ACC list prior to a meeting or vote for the purpose of getting members input,I was told this could not be done under the CA. electronics code which basically said that no official club business could be electronically posted because such information had to go to all club members and not all the members belong to the chessie list or have internet access. So my question is do you have any knowledge or information about this code? The Reply: No statute would cover posting the board agenda or matters to be voted for review and/or input of members, because this is NOT official business of the club. This is a critical distinction and one that needs to be understood. It is the legal responsibility of the BOARD to manage the club (i.e. the corporation) and when, whether and how to seek input of members is a matter of DISCRETION for the board. Club members have no specific rights to obtain board agendas or matters to be voted. Rather their rights to inspect records is covered by statute and more limited than those of directors. There is a difference between a board adequately researching and seeking input on specific topics and posting its actual agenda and matters to be voted. Besides the statutory problem of board action by less than unanimous written consent, a large problem with mail votes before ACC instituted conference call board meetings was that the directors simply did not have enough information or the opportunity to develop information and consensus. However, this is a board process of reflection on members' views and the need to sort out priorities and sometimes seek expert advice within the context of board meetings where executive session and confidentiality should protect this process. It's that process where there seems to have been a lapse in recent times and may -- I don't really know -- reflect less communication among board members than between the board and the membership at large. The directors of the 2 other parent clubs I work with use a private email group to communicate informally among themselves, so that they have a better idea what they are going to be dealing with and how best to inform members on particular topics.

I had to share his latest accomplishment. :>) I entered a local trial on Sunday (couldn't do Saturday) and I'm happy to report that Lex finally earned his first Novice Standard leg with a perfect score of 100 and a first place. The run really was perfect, well under time, and no sniffing on the table. So...I really do train this dog and when he's good, he's very good. And when he's bad, well... His Open JWW run was typical of the Lex you all know and love - he made up his own course but at least he stayed in the ring! He still thinks he should jump every jump he sees whether it's the next one or not. I have no idea what he'll do in agility in Ohio - he likes to keep me guessing. Lorrie & Lex

The ones I have are: 1.) the Bulletin is excellent & worth the price of admission 2.) Keeper of the standard..Voice of the breed in the AKC 3.) track/provide input on canine and hunting legislation 4.) Find members near you (Directory) 5.) keeper of history 6.) glad to hear Kimo is soon to be out of rehab. I think it's so incredible that Kimo got invited to both the obedience and the agility...that's such a great accomplishment and points out the versatility that Chesapeakes are famous for...if there was a field invitational he would be in that too, I'll bet. I hope George decided to run Merry in the invitational...I tried every way I could think of to make it work for us to go, but 3000 miles driving by myself to CA, plus driving in LA, plus juggling both dogs in who knows what type of environment...I just couldn't do it. Sadly, next year will probably be the same. The good news is that AKC announced that if any of the top five dogs decline, they will issue more invitations for the dogs on down the line. So at least four more Chesapeakes will be invited the #6,7,8&9 and maybe #10 also if George doesn't go. I submitted a list of the top ten invitees to the bulletin for the next issue. The national that you saw George run on NBC was the Purina invitational from 2004. Someone else wanted to see it also, so I put a clip of just George's run on my webpage here: http://members.cox.net/awilliscroft/ Ann

  • Technique for accepting new puppy into the house, Jaymie, jjarman123REMOVE@yahoo.com, September 14, 2006 at 08:48:05
I heard this on a pet talk radio show (no pets weren’t calling in). It was advice to help a dog accept a new puppy coming into the home. The host said to have a stuffed animal that you treat like a puppy in front of the established dog. You should pet it, talk to it, love on it all while giving attention and love to the established dog. Then when you bring in the new puppy your dog will see that he will still get love and attention even with a new puppy in the home. I am thinking of trying this when we get a new chessie. Roux is very attached to me as you know they can be. She does not really like it when I pet the Sheltie who is my husband’s “baby”. She doesn’t growl or snap or act ugly in any way but she will come over and stick her head in my lap for some love. What do you guys think of this technique?

I think my dogs would come snatch the stuffed animal and rip it to shreds to see if it had a squeaker inside!! LOL...seriously, I don't know. No way is any self respecting CBR going to act the same around a stuffed animal as a puppy. The good news is nearly all adults give a baby puppy a "grace period" where they are incredibly forgiving of puppy stuff. The main thing I'd think would be important is to make sure Roux is not running the house, that she knows who the big dogs are (you and your husband) you don't allow her to posture or snap at the Sheltie or the new pup; and when the pup does come, that she gets her own time with you when the pup is crated and you'll be fine ;-)

"when, whether and how to seek input of members is a matter of DISCRETION for the board." The membership doesn't need to know every minute detail of every thing coming before the BoD. But in situations where something affects the membership and its representation, then those should be posted in some fashion. For instance, does the BoD need to "consult" the membership in matters pertaining to our financial status? NO! Membership needs to be informed via treasurer's reports, but certainly doesn't need their hand in every corporate financial decision (just an example). But...changes to the Website or Bulletin content might benefit from input from members. Changes to WD rules should be posted ahead of a vote. Certainly anything where our AKC delegate was to give a vote, representing this club. Stuff like that would certainly be "safe" to present before the membership. Not communicating anything to the membership isn't "discretion". While it may be equal, in that NOBODY gets any official information, it is most unfair, as Gina points out below. It is unfair because only the few with an "in" even know what is being considered. This gives those few a much larger voice in matters of the ACC than other members with perhaps as much or more of a vested interest in the outcome. Lisa

She really is pretty good with the Sheltie. She definitely knows that the people in the house are the boss and I am definitely the top dog of all, LOL. She minds very well. She has had some posturing towards the Sheltie but then I see the Sheltie doing the same thing. We don’t tolerate it one bit and whoever is being a bitch at the time gets in trouble, fussed at, scolded, put outside (the worst punishment they can imagine). I don’t know how much a stuffed animal would fool Roux as she is the smartest dog I have ever had but I figure anything she sees me giving attention to and then seeing me give lots of love to her too could only help. It will still be a couple of years before we get another puppy. Roux will be 7 by then and maybe a little more laid back. Yeah, right.

Britt would say IS THAT FOR MEEEE??? HE LOVES stuffed toys..Anything that even remotely LOOKS like a TOY he thinks is his!!! It can be a ceramic lil shelf statue that is colorful and he will SEE it and sit and STARE at it for the longest time with this VERY WISTFUL face longing for it to come down so he can PLAY with it!!!! Dogs know the difference between stuffed toys and live puppies..totally two different things. you could take a box and fawn all over it and supposedly get the same response if that person said was true... My chessies are NOT easily fooled. A toy is a toy and a puppy is a puppy. Its just a hard core approach.. I am bringing a new puppy in the house.. you guys WILL accept it do or die OR else... from there its up to me to lay the foundations for how my adult dogs handle the new comer. I think what happens in the single dog home is that the single dog gets so used to being fawned over all its life that when new pup demands our attention..they do get jealous but again.. its a matter of Tough Love. I dont make ANY big deal over ANY of the adult dogs just because a new pup came into the house. I hug and cuddle the puppy like normal.. but I dont go out of my way to hug and give equal hug attention time to the adult dog. I expect the adult dog to ACT ADULT about it and accept it. I am after the Boss here NOT them. And they know it. Its just par for the course. I guess I have an advantage having multiple dogs in the house. They have all grown up with new dogs/pups coming into our home off and on over the years.. so when any new animal comes to stay or visit.. they are curious about it and then that wears off and pretty soon their attitude is "Moms brought home another baby..sigh.. here we go again!!! teeth, pee spots on the floor..and WE have to put up with it..sigh... " Finally when the pup is about 8-10 wks old they are accustomed to it and are putting up with having to be put up themselves for the protection of the pup or FROM the pup..hahah.... K

WHile I still maintain any CBR is way too smart to be fooled by any stuffed animal, I forgot all about Doug's favorite way to rile these dogs up. He will cup his hands together as if he's cradling some precious little thing just above their heads and say in a really syrupy voice: "AWWWWwwwwwww loooook, would you just look" and it never fails to get them leaping around and trying to see what he has. Of course they really probably thinks he has something they can kill! Seriously though, when the time comes to get a new pup, Roux will be fine. You would be amazed at how tolerant they are when the pup is little. By the time it's older (and peskier) it has been taught its place by the adults. I have to say I was a little worried about Usher and how he'd act at retriever training sessions. All his life he's played with his (very tolerant and forgiving) dam, half sis, and littermate til about 3 mos. His regular playmates were my sister's and a good friend's very tolerant Labs so I was worried he'd be way too "in your face" with strange dogs. But via whatever canine social skills he learns and the fact that when out in public I don't let him get near other dogs; I make him pay attention to me and he's been fine. In fact he had his first obedience class Tues. (he's 5 mos.) and he hasn't seen a lot of small dogs which there are quite a few of in the class. I think he thought the Papillon was an h'or d'oeuvre; he seemed fascinated by it and barked once or twice but he was overall a very good boy.

Ann, I have dial up at home but next time I have access to a high speed I'll have to have another look. Both Doug and I really enjoyed watching Georgie run with the BCs--we were so proud of her! To us, it was just awesome that the ONLY non border collie in the finals was a CBR and even he was rooting as loudly as if it was a football game. We only last yr. got a dish so being as that was on network TV it was the first time DOug had ever seen agility. You could really see her heart and courage when they showed a close up of the weave poles, the CBR is just built so different from the BCs it almost looked like watching a different species.

But I haven't really had to climb Ruff about baby kittie--he's been very gentle and sweet. In fact, when my friend's Lab wanted to chase the baby, Ruffie wouldn't let her! I think the main thing is to always supervise, and when you can't supervise, separate rooms or crates or one out and one in.

Might work for some, but all my chessies are stuffed animal freaks. They love to make a hole in the toy then pluck all the stuffing out. It would be short lives in my house and just fuel their ambition to capture the stuffed animal and destuff it! I think people make much too big a deal out of bringing a puppy home. The puppy should not be allowed to interact with the adult dog until the puppy is used to it's new environment and starts to learn the parameters of proper behavior. The adult dog may watch the puppy from another room by using gates and crates to keep them separated. Let them out together in a fenced yard for short period of times until they get used to each other. Often times making a big deal of the puppy just creates a problem that might not otherwise have been. Kathy

They get them from the puppy mills who allege to be breeding AKC registered stock. The problem is that even if the parents of the pups are actually the ones they are being registered to, there is no quality, no certifications, no nothing except something with fur and 4 legs that may bear a resemblance to what its alleged to be registered as. Then there are those that are registered but may be sired by yet something else. Sadly, it comes back to the fact that AKC is nothing more than a registry, and unless you can prove the parentage is not the dog purported to be, there is nothing you can do except not buy puppies from pet stores. Just going through this. (this was a male/female intro, a same sex intro may go different) What Kathy mentioned is how we dealt with our intro. Supervise the pup and dog with times together. Within 5 weeks they're now playing together well, sharing toys, don't bother food & water, etc. I think the older male is "tolerant" of the puppy stuff. And when she goes over the top, he lets her know it. When we see play escalating to more, we step in. And correct both dogs. Then again all dogs and people can not be alike.

Basically, what I did was set up a crate in my living room. Puppy was put in crate, big dog was allowed free roam of house. Big dog would go sniff crate. Puppy would lay in crate and watch big dog. When puppy was let out, both dogs were supervised. If puppy wanted to play w/ big dog, I would let puppy initiate play. If big dog did NOT want to play, I would allow big dog to give correction. I only interferred if really necessary. Otherwise I let them work it out. I DID NOT correct big dog for correcting the puppy and I DID NOT coddle the little dog when big dog corrected her. Once, both dogs were outside and little dog kept pestering big dog. Then I heard this gawd aweful noise. It sounded like big dog was murdering little dog. Little dog was screaming and screaming and she rolled over on her back and pee'd on herself. Big dog corrected her for being a pest. She didn't hurt little dog, she was just letting it be known that enough is enough. Both dogs (both females) love together quite nicely, actually. http://img.inkfrog.com/pix/00cyrus00/IMG_3573_1__700.jpg Jessie & Morgan http://img.inkfrog.com/pix/00cyrus00/IMG_3573_1__700.jpg

That is funny how your dog acted with the small dogs. Roux has been raised with 2 Shelties, one, the female, is smaller but actually the breed standard of about 13 inches. The other, Skip, was bigger. Roux is absolutely terrified of little dogs and will run away from them. When we go up to the lake where there are campers around, if we walk through the campground on our way to the woods to run a bit, she will run away from any chihuahuas, jack russels, or any other little dog. Now she saw a dog about the size of a big Sheltie once and got a little more aggressive looking but gladly came along with me. She is such a wimp.

That is too funny - Bridget hated the tunnel and would do whatever she could dream up to avoid it. The instructor suggested when she stuck her head in it to roll her tennis ball part way to her - far enough so she could see it (all the other dogs were baited with food treats - the only thing good enough for her was her tennis ball). We tried rolling the ball to her and she ran out and tried to "dig" under the tunnel from the outside where the ball had stopped. She made up for it by prancing through the weave poles any time she got close to them.

Did you try compressing the tunnel so it was only 2 or 3 feet deep and in a straight line? A lot of dogs don't like the tunnel, so that's the way you start them, and gradually work out the length in a straight line, then start with a gentle curve. Also, you should have someone hold the dog at one end, thread your leash through the tunnel and you call her through to you using the leash, then reward with lots of treats. The dog really has no choice but to go through it that way and gets mega rewarded by you at the other end. Kathy

  • Re: AKC ? I HOPE THIS IS NOT TRUE - Long reply from AKC, Ann McD, quiltdogREMOVE@yahoo.com, September 16, 2006 at 08:28:44
It seems it, more or less, is true- the following from the poodle folks, via the Norfolk Terrier folks - The gist of it seems to be they are teaching/allowing the Petland people to register dogs for people on-line in the store at time of sale. Here's the LONG response from David Roberts, AVP Registration and Customer Services. Thank you for your feedback. We appreciate and understand the concerns of our breeders and dog owners. We hope the information provided below is helpful. At the September meeting of the AKC Delegates, the AKC announced a program in which Petland may facilitate the individual AKC registration process for eligible dogs sold in their stores. Today, many of these AKC-registrable dogs are registered with other registries or not at all. Several questions emerged following that announcement. We provide the following details to reduce misunderstandings about the program. What kind of agreement does the AKC have with Petland? Following are some of the basic facts about this plan: Only AKC-registrable dogs are eligible for this program. The program does not provide registration to dogs not otherwise eligible for registration. We are doing this in large part to assure that AKC-registrable puppies already in these stores are registered with AKC. AKC will educate Petland staff about the value and importance of AKC registration. AKC will highlight the opportunity for participation in appropriate AKC events and the importance of programs like AKC Canine Good Citizen to promote responsible dog ownership. Petland will encourage new puppy owners to register with the AKC. Petland will help the customer complete the AKC registration form online, similar to the current online registration process. The customer will pay the entire AKC registration fee in the store. Petland may charge the customer a small processing fee to cover their cost. Registering in the store increases the likelihood that the puppy owner will register their new puppy with the AKC. Research has shown that if dog owners don't register their dog soon after acquiring it, they are less likely to do so in the future. This program allows the AKC inspections team to continue its active presence in the commercial sector. If puppies sold in retail pet stores are not AKC registrable, AKC loses the ability to inspect and influence the care and conditions in pet stores and the breeding kennels that supply the pet stores. AKC and Petland are not engaged in an endorsement, partnership, affiliation or joint venture. A written agreement between AKC and Petland exists, in large part, to protect the AKC and ensure that all applicable AKC Registration Rules and Procedures are followed. AKC does not endorse any breeder or seller of dogs. Our central message about how to buy a puppy -- to thoroughly research the breed and the breeder and to consult AKC resources, starting with the parent club -- has not and will not change. This program has not changed AKC's registration policies. The AKC has always registered dogs sold through pet retailers as long as the pet store and breeder are in compliance with our standards for accurate record keeping and meet the AKC's care and conditions requirements. Read our Compliance fact sheet at: http://www.akc.org/press_center/facts_stats.cfm?page=6. The program with Petland offers AKC an opportunity to communicate the benefits of registration and involve new puppy owners in the world of AKC but does not imply an endorsement any more than AKC papers have in the past. It will ensure that AKC inspectors and investigators continue to have access to all kennels breeding AKC puppies. This will continue enforcement of our care and conditions policies and compliance with record-keeping. Why is AKC encouraging the registration of all registrable dogs? Today, many AKC-registrable dogs sold by pet retailers are not registered with the AKC by their owner. Less than 50 percent of AKC-registrable dogs are registered with the AKC. The AKC strategic plan targets this problem in all customer groups, including pet stores. When these new owners do not register, AKC and our clubs lose the ability to encourage them to become part of the fancy or to educate them about responsible dog ownership. We feel we can best promote our values and bring people into the world of AKC events by reaching out to new dog owners no matter where they choose to purchase their dog. AKC's ability to influence legislation and public opinion is directly linked to the number of dog owners we represent. Ultimately, AKC's ability to take a leadership stand on any issue is closely tied to the size of our constituency (the number of people with AKC registered dogs). AKC can best serve the interests of dogs and their owners by maintaining stringent standards and promoting the benefits of AKC registration. With more than 20 different for-profit businesses acting as canine "registries" in the U.S., it is important that the AKC distinguish itself as the genuine purebred registry. Many of these for-profit businesses will "register" dogs with little or no proof of lineage and none have any inspections or compliance standards. These businesses actively and aggressively work to convert AKC registrations into applications for their listing services. The fact that AKC can inspect kennels and pet shops and take action against them whenever necessary protects the welfare of all AKC puppies. AKC's ability to offer important programs is directly linked to our annual registrations. In addition to subsidizing AKC events, registration fees provide support for a range of programs and services including the AKC Canine Health Foundation and the AKC Museum of the Dog. Registration income also provides an important source of funding for our scholarship programs, veterinary outreach, our compliance department, combating unfair canine legislation, providing disaster relief and much more. What else is being done to promote AKC Registration? We are less than a year into a five year strategic plan that has already introduced a suite of benefits and resources for the fancy including a breeder newsletter, full litter registration option, litter coupons, online accounts and enhancements to online dog registration. In addition, AKC has introduced new registration benefits like dog.com e-certificates for both breeders and individual registrants and complimentary first office visits at participating veterinarians. As we continue implementing the plan, additional programs for breeders and new dog owners will be introduced. We have made a significant investment in a diversified advertising campaign that communicates our mission and promotes the value of AKC registration and the integrity of our Registry. Our message embodied in our advertising tagline "We're more than champion dogs. We're the dog's champion" has reached almost 200 million people in print and broadcast media during the past year. How will this impact rescue? Dogs will be sold in pet stores whether or not AKC registers them. However the AKC feels that by bringing more registrants into the AKC fold we have the opportunity to educate them and involve them in programs that promote responsible dog ownership. What prompted this agreement? The AKC has undertaken a strategic plan to reverse the significant decline in registrations that has occurred during the last decade. The plan includes a number of separate initiatives. Together these initiatives are designed to regain market share, while maintaining a registry of unequaled integrity and size. The approach outlined in the plan is to increase registrations by addressing the needs of all customer groups - fanciers, breeders, pet owners and the commercial channel. This focus stems from a belief that purebred dogs are best served by the AKC, and that breeding programs are improved with our involvement. This inclusive approach helps position AKC as the voice for all dogs and all dog owners. What are the next steps? As a result of the questions raised both during and after the September Delegates Meeting the Staff will continue reviewing and communicating with our core constituency. A meeting will be held prior to the October Board Meeting which will include a number of Delegates and fanciers to discuss this initiative. The AKC Board of Directors will discuss this topic during the October Board Meeting. The program is under review by staff and management. Further details will be provided when they are available. Congrats to Jane Pappler and Can CH Redlion's Hit Doctor ** CMH, WDX, JH for successfully completing another MH test today at the Mid-Jersey Labrador Retriever Club's test. Joe is owned and handled by Jane. This is Joe's 3rd MH leg in the US. He has already completed his MH in Canada.
